Surfshops

Surfshops existed before surf magazines, surf movies, surf music, surf videos or surf stars, serving as the epi-center for surfing – besides the beach – in any surfing community.  You went there to order a surfboard, watch it being made, meet other surfers and hang out, gossip the surf news, get a job (patching, sanding, glassing and ultimately shaping, or selling/teaching) and eventually buy surfwax, the first exclusive surfing product.
Having a connection at a surfshop was an essential part of being a surfer.  How else did you get a board?  Discounts?  On the surf team?  Sponsored?  Learn to surf?
A good surfshop anchored the surfing community and attracted visitors from up and down the coast.  Dynamic local surfshops are an endangered breed and continue to survive only with the support of the local surfing community.  Walk in to one and ask for something special.  The surfer at the desk will take care of you like only another surfer can!  With pleasure, salt-streaked hair and a surf-crafted smile.
