identity crisises as a path to higher learning: began surfing in late 70s, competed up and down cali coast through first half of 80s, surfed on asp world tour through the second, landed in sydney in '91 when the surf career dried up, put pen to paper for waves magazine, indulged in self indulgence, read beach culture, surfer's journal, kerouac, miller, mailer, burroughs, bukowski as most aspiring writers do, moved back to los angeles, wrote for surf mags, shot photos for surf mags, lived hand to mouth or more like fingertip to mouth, became editor at surfing mag, became disillusioned with inner workings of corporatized surf mags, spun off on a journey of independence and have been doing my best to stay there ever since.
